The population was 15,688 at the 2000 census. Located approximately 10 miles west of Chicago?s downtown loop area, Forest Park, Illinois combines the unlimited resources of an urban setting with a small town sense of community, making it an exceptional place in which to live, work and do business.

The community, once part of a larger community called Harlem, officially took the name Forest Park on August 12, 1907. For much of its history, Forest Park has been known as a "city of cemeteries," seemingly with more dead "residents" than living ones, because of the large number of old and intriguing burial grounds within it.

Forest Park cemeteries include: Altenheim, German Waldheim (now merged with Forest Home, home to the famous Haymarket riot monument), Jewish Waldheim, Concordia and Woodlawn (including Showmen's Rest). Showmen's Rest Cemetery is a 750 plot section of Woodlawn Cemetery where a mass grave of 56 (or perhaps 61) employees of the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus were interred. They were killed in the Hammond circus train wreck on June 22, 1918 at Ivanhoe, Indiana (about 5 1/2 miles east of Hammond, Indiana), when an empty Michigan Central Railroad troop train from Detroit, Michigan to Chicago, Illinois piloted by an engineer, Alonzo Sargent, who had fallen asleep plowed into their circus train. Among the dead were Arthur Dierckx and Max Nietzborn of the "Great Dierckx Brothers" strong man act and Jennie Ward Todd of "The Flying Wards." (Adding to the mysterious setting, Forest Park received national attention for the 1977 revelation that the remains of Mike Todd, the third husband of actress Elizabeth Taylor, had been dug up in a local cemetery. He was later reburied under a headstone bearing his real name, Avrom Hirsch Goldbogen.)

Forest Park was also once host to the Forest Park Amusement Park, a small but popular amusement park at the end of the trainlines. Prohibition, however, hurt it enough to force it to close. Its former location is now around the Desplaines Avenue Blue Line stop (Forest Park).

Today, quality education, affordable homes and a close-knit, active community make Forest Park, Illinois a perfect place to raise a family. Its unique combination of charming small-town life and urban sophistication benefits large and small businesses alike. Forest Park residents enjoy award-winning stage plays at Circle Theatre, first class dining at any number of fine eateries and pubs, and play host to a variety of regionally attended events every year. The Park District of Forest Park, located near the center of the village, has a 15-acre park, with an aquatic center. Shopping is mostly located on Madison Street, a narrow street with turn of the century gaslights. Previously known for dominance of bars, it now also features antique merchants, boutiques, and eating establishments.

Besides the availability of major professional and collegiate sports throughout the Chicagoland community, Forest Park plays host to some unique events of its own. Every summer, in the last few days of July and first few of August, Forest Park's Park District plays host to the Forest Park No Glove National Invitational Softball Tournament. This is an invitational to all the best 16-inch softball teams in Chicagoland (and sometimes from other regions). The game is slow-pitch softball played without gloves, a favorite in Chicagoland.

And getting from Forest Park into Chicago and back couldn't be easier; the Metra, CTA Elevated Trains (both the Green and Blue lines) and the Eisenhower Expressway can be accessed in town. The Forest Park train stop on the CTA Blue Line is the line's western terminus, located on the Eisenhower Expressway at Desplaines Avenue.
